What Indian Cricket Team needs?

World Cup win in 2011. Dream come true for millions. But what happened after that. No one wants to remember. Whitewash against Australia. Retirement of Dravid and Laxman.Whitewash against England. ODI team which once looked impeccable now is in shambles. It was a huge relief India didnt let a whitewash happen against Pakistan. Now England are back to take revenge of their 5-0 ODI loss last time that happened in India. And of course, GOD's retirement from short format to add to the woes. His need is no more in ODI, still the confidence and aura will be missed. So what does the Indian Cricket team needs now?

India is in a transitional stage like Australia was when the famous Warne, Mcgrath, Hayden, Gilly retired. Not the whole team is new. Gambhir, Sehwag, Dhoni and Yuvi are old enough to be called experienced players. I wont be surprised if one or two calls it a day. I wish though. Raina, Rohit, Kohli, Ashwin, Jadeja are no more new bloods. They have played enough international matches. They have been exposed to all kinds of situations and pressures. So its mindless to call this team as new inexperienced. Maybe this is the team to prove themselves in Australia, England and S.africa. But no excuses should be made in terms of their talent or experience.

Well. Let us look each and every department and the format to know what needs to be done. Lets start with batting which has been our only strength for years. No doubt we have lot of quality talented players. Unlike an era where we were struck with Sachin, Dravid and Ganguly in ODIs and with VVS added to Test format, now all have proved themselves well either in Ranji or IPL. But the problem is our batsmen are low on confidence and have become complacent. Playing carefree innings, going after the ball always, not spending enough time in the pitch, not rotating the strike, seeing of the new ball are some of the basic problems that we face. In test cricket, except for Sachin, Sehwag, Gambhir and Dhoni, its a relatively new team. They have to be groomed. We saw the horrible performance of India when all the experienced failed as a unit. Except for Pujara, Indians fell like a spineless team.

When it comes to bowling, we never had upper hand. Problem is with identifying and grooming youngsters. Our sister nation Pakistan is known for producing pace bowlers and spinners of world class. India has serious problems in this area. Munaf, Praveen, Sreesanth, Irfan, Ishant who were once seen as prodigy are no where in the scene now. The reason being they changed their original style for the sake of extended career. Be it reducing their pace, run up, changing their action etc, has never been fruitful.

Fielding is one area that the present Indian team can be proud of. The young blood have again and again proved themselves in this. Captaincy - We can see Dhoni's skills have deteriorated with time. He is not experimenting things as often now. The risk taking ability is gone and he has become more of a safe captain now. But with the present team we dont have an option for replacement. Sehwag and Gambhir are fighting for the place in the team with their consistent poor performances. Kohli can be an option, but its too early. He is aggressive and he needs time to get matured. So Dhoni is the only shoulder to rest upon and hope he gets his midas touch again. Fletcher doesnt seem to add any value to the team. Its important to get new coach. Ganguly name is surfacing often for that. But management team has to consider the team dynamics, team politics and other factors before calling anyone.

So problems are there in every area and as a holistic part, it leads to the downfall of Indian team. Preparing team for 2015 world cup is too futuristic. But its time to experiment with the bunch of players we have. But making a test team is of utmost importance. Pujara, Kohli looks good for test arena. Gambhir and Sehwag have to hit their form back. Its time to look for opening options. Also our middle order without Dravid & VVS and Sachin in awful form looks vulnerable. Its high time for selectors and captain to make some tough decisions if necessary to build a strong team.

Every team has gone through this tough phase. India has got talent and it depends how well we identify, groom and stick to those talents. IPL is blamed for the catastrophe. I dont think any player wearing Indian T shirt in front of 30000 odd crowd will play to fail. Problem is not with the dedication but with talent and confidence. So, right now Indian team needs Dhoni and supporting coach more than ever. They have to back up and hold up each other. It should be a history in the making. Hope Dhoni delivers.

My wish list for 2013

2012 - World gonna end according to Mayan calendar. But it didnt. Good. Lot of wishes. Nice that instead of making a bucket list, I am making my wish list :P

Lot of things happened this year. Both good, bad and terrible. So my wishlist is about how I can lead a better enjoyable life in a better world. Some may not be realistic and that is my first wish "Being Realistic"

1. My work after MBA as Project Manager starts this year. So wish I learn new things which will help to build a successful career.
2. I wish to learn to survive in Mumbai. I should start loving vada pav and poha.
3. I wish no talks pop up in my home regarding my marriage.
4. I wish I could spend enough quality time with my old friends (a trip to ladakh :)
5. I wish to go to gym regularly ( I know I am fit. But still :P )
6. I wish to develop the habit of reading some books
7. I wish to learn to cook (atleast sambhar, rasam and some subji)
8. I wish to see Rajini's Kochadiyan on 1st day

Moving onto somethings other than my needs.

1. I wish khap communities think sense. Better get wiped out.
2. I wish proper bills are passed regarding rape. It is really sad to think that I am from a land which is worshiped as goddess and girls are getting raped daily.
3. I wish radical reforms are made to stabilize the economy and bring down inflation
4. I wish Gandhi family takes a step ahead and speaks on issues bothering the nation
5. I wish the politicians and bureaucrats are more responsible
6. I wish the Tamil Nadu power crisis ends

The list is endless. But that is human nature: to wish for more. Hope the coming year brings happiness and joy to everyone and let peace and love prevail.

Happy new year to everyone :)

My 26th Birthday Bash

It was 4th December again in my calendar. I turned 26 this time. This birthday was totally different for 2 reasons. One. This was my last birthday celebration in a college environment, if I am not destined to do another PG course again. Two. I started feeling for the first time that I am getting old and a feeling that I want to get settled soon swiped my mind. Its not like it stroked earlier. But this time it was bit harder.

Keeping aside these feelings, I enjoyed the day more than I ever thought. Thanks to all my well wishers. I am glad that my brother, cousins, friends and family showered all their love and blessings. It all started with typical birthday bash that one will imagine in a college. Birthday bumps and kicks inaugurated the day which made sure my voice is heard to my ancestors. It was followed by oil, paint and sauce bath. Thanks to my innovative and heartless friends who wanted me to look fair and colored. Also they made me wear a saree. I don't know how people get such weird ideas. Thanks to another friend Sudarshan who shared kicks with me as it was his birthday too. The whole basketball court was in vigor and merry mood. It all ended with me cutting a tasty cake and having some snaps.

Now the venue changed to hostel. I was welcomed to my wing with my friends tearing my T-shirt and making me enjoy the cold Pune weather bare. I was gifted a speaker system and was inaugurated with a tamil song kalasala. They made me dance and it was a happy occasion where everyone joined in.

Day started after a sound sleep at 11.30 AM. I had an awesome lunch at room from Ghar ka Khaana. Followed by a birthday bash from my director Subbu Sir himself. I was happy he didnt know its my birthday, else would have got more screwed.

The day ended with having a memorable time with friends at bolai and shapath celebration at 12.
It was a fun filled day that will be memorable. Thanks to all who made it a wonderful day for me.

Philips - Blueprint'12

Date: Nov - 19th 2012
Place: Philips Head Office, Gurgaon
Time: 9.30 AM
Area: BoardRoom
People: Indian Management Team, Philips

A chance to present a step out strategy to Philips IMT
A chance to prove ourselves (3 men and a baby - Me, Alok, Debi and Shikha)
A chance to impress the panelists
A chance to sell our idea
A chance to get a PPI
A chance to win 3 or 2 or 1 lakh

All went well in the boardroom. We were pleased with our presentation. We were satisfied with our answers to IMT queries. We were happy to give poses and feedback on how the whole blueprint went. We were privileged to interact with each of IMT and get insights.

But the results weren't pleasing. We couldn't make it into top three. But it was an enthralling experience though. Endless night outs, brain storming sessions, 2'o clock maggi and coffee, first trip to Delhi, Gurgaon Philips office, Kareena's picture everywhere  - couldn't get better.
Giving a boardroom presentation in front of the top management itself was a reward.

Its not a failure. But a step before success. We were happy that we proved a point in front of all. SCMHRD is as good as any top B-School and we have the potential to make it to the top. Getting selected from 600 entries is no mean achievement. And this will always be etched in my memory as one of the best days of my life !!

What Maruti teaches Management ?

Terrible incident at Manesar Maruti plant leaving one HR manager dead and 100 injured. Plant is locked down for 3 weeks now. Waiting period for Dzire is 5 months now. With no clear picture on when the plant is going to operate Maruti will lose its valuable customers. What went wrong with Maruti?

Maruti are known for reading customers minds. They know the Indian market very well than any other competitor. How they lost their way in not knowing their workers? Is it because of too much importance to profits and bottom line growth and negligence towards workers. Arresting people based on criminal acts won't solve the issues. Workers won't be driven to such utmost mayhem unless there is serious issue. This is a much deeper problem where management has to be blamed. I feel this may open new ways in management.

1. Importance to Industry Relations
With services industry growing fast for past 2 decades, IR job is over looked. There has not been good talent groomed in this area. Shop floor roles are neglected by HR people. Time has come to revamp the strategies in manufacturing sectors.

2. People Management
People management has always been an important skill for any manager. Understanding workers requirements and managing them is the priority. Managers have a serious task of coping with foreign board and Indian workers. Foreign top management are at times restrained in knowing workers. Its the responsibility of Indian managers to address workers issues at right time.

3. Relationship and Trust
Relationship with the workers is the only way to move ahead without any problems. Trust with the management has to be created with the managers. The valid demands have to be addressed in unbiased way. Suspending and kicking out people won't solve the issue.

4. Social discontent
Profit motive alone won’t let a company prosper. It is the social life of workers that help sustain the company in long term. Workers are discontent with the top management earning a lot and it is their hard work which is increasing their salaries. Salaries at top are better off and workers wages are increased only marginally.

It is time to make some serious changes to the policies and bring in some public mode of administration for better managed systems. Changing policies and mode of recruitment for contract workers may or may not solve the issue. Only when people's interest are satisfied real problem will be solved.

SACHIN - Please make a call on ODIs

The post may contradict the views of many Indians who worship Sachin as God. Sachin has been a great inspiration and honor to our country. No doubts about that. I grew watching Sachin. No one can deny he is one of the greats in history who have played cricket. None can imagine to break his records. No one can match his humility. But there has been something that bothers me recently since his world cup stint.

Whole cricket world has been waiting for the 100th century which eventually came in a controversial way.  Slow 100 in a pitch where the target was never a competing one. He could have done better. As 100th century took a great toll on him, I would give the benefit of the doubt to him. It was never easy to carry the high hopes every time you go to bat. But Sachin should have done better that day.

But the reason I am writing the post is for another reason totally. Recently Sachin has started making calls on when to play and when not to for the team. Getting rest for a series can be acceptable due to continuous schedule. But now-a-days Sachin regularly keeps him away from sub-continental matches. I strongly feel that this is not good for a team. When many young players start to show their talent, I personally believe that it is time for Sachin to retire from ODI.

If Sachin is not going to play next world cup, there is no point sticking in the team and playing matches in Australia and South Africa. Young team should be allowed to play in such conditions. Let the youngsters to gel well as a team and play. Every time Sachin enters the ODI squad, the team composition changes and so is the team dynamics. Its high time to let youngsters explore foreign conditions. They should be allowed to try their combinations. Preparing for the next world cup can be too early, but there are many bright and promising youngsters who are waiting for the opportunity.

With Dravid retired from Test, Sachin holds the great responsibility of building a solid test team. So, its time for him to make a call on ODIs and mould the test team. Our ODI team is in a well to do position without Sachin. Gone are the days when we needed Sachin to win a match in ODI. With all due respect, Sachin- you made us proud. you made us happy. you made us cry. you made us angry. you made cricket our religion. But its now time to say good bye from ODIs.

I fight human trafficking

Its been a long time I wrote. Not because that I did not find time. The lousy truth was I did not want to spend time writing. This can not be explained. Here I am, back with a message, that I have been supporting for a year almost.  Human trafficking. A social initiative from SCMHRD called S.H.A.P.A.T.H which fights against human trafficking. Combating Human Trafficking and bringing about a change in the lives of victims with alternate means of livelihood has been the vision of S.H.A.P.A.T.H.

S.H.A.P.A.T.H stands for Symbiosis Headstart for Awareness, Prevention and Action against Trafficking of Humans. This was kick-started in year 2008 from my college seniors. In the first year of its inception, it undertook a city wide awareness drive about the menace of Human Trafficking across Pune. It conducted an education drive to sensitize the students across schools and colleges in Pune on this grave issue. To convey the message to the Pune citizens, it performed street plays, conducted laptop drives and a peace march in Pune. It also conducted a seminar where eminent personalities from NGOs, Corporates, the Police, the Law Council and students from various B- Schools were invited to share their concerns and experience.

Every year  S.H.A.P.A.T.H  performs Band drive in the city of Pune for 2 days. The concept behind the band is not only to collect funds but also to garner support for the cause by having more and more people wear our bands. S.H.A.P.A.T.H adopted the Government run rescue centre in Mundhwa, PUNE for the trafficked victims. They do rehabilitation programs with help of community college. Girls over are are trained on various programs like candle making, Jewel making, Perfume making. Also motivational programs are taken up.

S.H.A.P.A.T.H also tied up with Apne Aap Women Worldwide and took part in their signature campaign (COOL MEN DON'T BUY SEX) demanding change in the legislature against human trafficking. Around 10000 signatures were collected and have been mailed to President of India. S.H.A.P.A.T.H takes a stand to end human trafficking.
Join hands with S.H.A.P.A.T.H.

Stolen from dreams
Her lifeless body becomes devil's meal
She asks ‘why life is so harsh’
But answers never come
Lives life of a torn clothAnd her self-respect her soul flies
Is this life has to offer her
No air in her lungs...
No strength in her body...
Her pain pours like rain
She is not for sale
She cannot be bought
For God knows life is priceless
